Generalised Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity and then some..

Wha? I know. I know. God only knows what's that.
It's the first word that i learned in my first financial econometrics class and i think i'm in for a pretty challenging semester. I try to look smart in class by strategically placing my silver pen near the corners of my mouth (left & right) or chew the tips of my spectacles.

For those who havent heard from me for ages, here are a few things about what i've been doing for the past few months.

I have tried and succesfully been able to grow a stubble. It's not as immaculate as i want it to be and doesn't make me feel very cool either. But what the heck... i'm keeping it for at least another few months. Maybe til summer then. keeps my chin warm in winter.
I am enjoying Melbourne quite a bit. The weather is really cold but it's still a step up from the fiery humidity in KL. You can get a good workout by just walking to your car.

I do however miss Malaysia at times. It's the simple things. Simple things like spitting on the floor, speaking malay, Waiting for hours for the LRT buses and the great mamak chats. In fact, i think that the mamak stalls are where Malaysians, in general let their defensive walls down and start sharing (too much occasionally) about their lives. From football, Why men have nipples, Politics, Badawi being a softy, the Jihad, Religion, God, Pornography struggles to even the sharing of one's core values in life. Nothing becomes too sacred or taboo when one holds a teh tarik/teh ais/limau/teh o in their hands. Perhaps its the sugar high, the bacteria laden ice cubes or the dense cigarrette-filled air. I dont know. We will never know.

I miss home. I miss Malaysia. I miss the amazing national health food, Ramli burger.

Another thing. It's been really bugging me. It's about Israel's massacre and all out attack on Lebanon. Nothing breaks me more than seeing the Chosen people go to war on the grounds of 3 POWs not being released. 750000 people are losing their homes and the deathtoll reads 418 lebanon people and counting. It's strike 3 for Israel after the acts of 1978 and 1982. I'm can't help but feel restless. It's either the UN or US who will be the clean up crew this time.

Someone always cleans up the mess. Someone always does.
The mike is yours now.

Love,
The Dugong

I've got to agree with Bush about Israel being on the self defence. Lets just put ourselves in their shoes. Just imagine yourself constantly living under pressure and fear of your neighbours. Israel have gone through constant terrorism attacks. Just imagine living the bali attacks on a daily basis because of your neighbours. I believe that the occupation of south Lebanon is purely a defensive military strategy. However, I am not saying that Israel is completely innocent especially with the recent deaths of UN observers and high civilian casualties. I just believe that before we hastily judge Israel, we have to firstly put ourselves in their shoes.

im not writing this cos u said to write intelligent stuff, but because i read the comments and disagree with wombie so i had to say something.

first of all, if u agree with bush, remember, if it sounds smart, he probably did not write it. he was just reading a piece of paper his puppeteers, *ahem*, sorry, 'advisors', had written for him. secondly, occupation of southern lebanon might make sense if u reason it, cos that's where hezbollah is based. but that's not just they've done. they fricken bombed half the country, particularly beirut which is not in the south at all. tell me how bombing beirut airport, all major bridges (and various other parts of the city and suburbs) along with a full naval blockade help to combat hezbollah.

ok so kidnapping 2 israeli soldiers is bad. but do u have to go and destroy an entire country because of that? one that had finally recovered from civil war and was benefiting from a modern, peaceful lifestyle but has now been completely ruined again leaving thousands more refugees?

sure i'd be a bit pissed off if i was israel, but talk about a grossly disproportionate response...

sorry for my rant daniel, i know u've got enough comments already. had to put in my two cents... =p

Dear Blog owner,I stumbled on your blog and i feel i have to drop a comment. Feel free to delete it if anonymous comments are not your thing.
Israel,
You have taken overreaction to another level. If someone, in this case, Hezbollah threatens you with a pen knife, you turn around, take out a gun, shot the person, their families and every living thing around them. I strongly disagree with Wombie. It's not a military strategy. It's an act of stupidity, immaturity and of a really spoilt child.

In response to Sean's comments, I believe that Israel was not threaten by a single pen knife but a bunch of robbers with pen knives. If I was a person with a gun threatened by a bunch of robbers with pen knives, I might react by shooting down one of the robbers. Drawing from analogy, Israel is one of the few countries in modern civilisation that have been surrounded by enemies throughout history since thousands of years ago. I'm not agreeing with Israel's over-reaction but as I said earlier, we shouldn't hastily judge Israel especially if we are seeking peacetalks to resume.

Jesus says tt when someone slaps your cheek, turn and give them theother chee. i think it ain't our place to analyse the situation (ie. neighbours hate us), then take upon ourselves to act upon it (ie. eating of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil).

Any military strategists would agree that this is basic 101 modern military strategy - Air campaign and naval blockade followed by ground forces. Israel knows that Lebanon would counter-attack if they went after Hezbollah hence, explaning the reason for disarming Lebanon first.
